REVIEW: ultimate spider-man: war of the symbiotes

The Story: Eddie Brock talks to people on the park bench and describes what has happened to him since Ultimate Spider-Man 38. The entire flashback contains a fight with Spider-Man and Carnage, the reappearance of Gwen Stacy, and an encounter with Beetle.

The Good: Ultimate Venom - Why has it taken this long to get him back into a comic book? Ultimate Venom takes everything that is great about classic Venom and builds on it. Even his new 'look' has me excited to find out what is next for him. Art - All of the "Ultimate" titles have great artwork. For me, its a welcome change from the shabby art in other books (ie Amazing Spider-Man). Even the way the panels are laid out make these books more enjoyable to read than other titles out there right now.

The Bad: Ultimate Carnage - Its not that I didn't like Ultimate Carnage, I just didn't like how he was portrayed. First he shows up out of no where, then there is a fight between him and Ultimate Venom (that had potential to be much longer/cooler), and then he is absorbed by Eddie Brock. So is Eddie Brock now Ultimate Carnage, does Ultimate Carnage even exist anymore? Ultimates - I've never really been a fan of the Ultimates and their appearance in this series brought it down a notch. Granted, they weren't the main focus of the story; however, the times Spidey was talking to them was just boring filler.

The Overall - 4 outta 5. I want more Ultimate Venom! I look forward to seeing what the future holds for this new ginormous, red-eyed Venom.

REVIEW: asm: new ways to die (anti-venom)

The Story: Eddie Brock becomes Anti-Venom after the symbiote mixes with his now "healed" blood. Along with Spider-Man, the newly created Anti-Venom attacks Mac Gargan's Venom and The Thunderbolts.

The Good: Eddie Brock - So being a die hard Venom fan, I might be a little bias, but I really enjoy Eddie Brock's character. I have to feel for him. He is finally rid of his addiction (the symbiote), his cancer is cured, his life can finally turn around, and what happens? The symbiote finds away to come back into his life and take him captive once again. However, this time Eddie stays in charge of the relationship and uses his powers to "clean" the evil out of his villains. Spider-Man/Anti-Venom relationship - I liked the interaction and teamwork between the two heroes. I have mixed feelings on whether or not Anti-Venom can star in a comic by himself though.

The Bad: Another symbiote - Seriously, how many symbiotes are there going to be? Marvel already has a heroic symbiote, Toxin. I would like more Toxin stories to be developed and build on that character than have more good symbiotes wondering around NYC. Gargan's Venom - Biggest...mistake...ever! I can't take him seriously at all. When he was first introduced (big bulging muscles, a bad ass the T-bolts just had to have), I thought there was potential. After New Ways To Die, I just want him to die. Now that his cancer is gone and he is no longer weak, the symbiote needs to reunite with Eddie and bring back the classic Venom we all know and love!

The Overall: 3.5 outta 5. Mainly because its been far too long since I've read a good Eddie Brock story. The Anti-Venom idea would have been good, if Marvel did abandon Toxin so quickly.

Venom '09
Has it been 6 months already? It seems like just yesterday when I started thevenomsite. There has been a lot of Venom, especially towards the end, in 2008. We were introduced to Anti-Venom, Venom attacked NYC with symbiotes in the video game Spider-Man: Web of Shadows, Ultimate Venom appeared for the first time in Ultimate Spider-Man since 2003, and we saw what looks like the end of Venom's run as a Thunderbolt in the two part series "Burning Down the House."
Looking ahead to the next couple months, it seems as though Venom will be laying low for awhile. Without any Venom news to report and in order to continuously add to this site, I will be reviewing his comics (this also gives me a good excuse to bust them out again). Feel free to post your own thoughts on each series as well.
Thanks again to everyone who stops by to check out my site every once and awhile.

REVIEW: venom: dark origin

The Story: A look into the childhood and a young Eddie Brock. The series explains who Eddie was before the symbiote found him that fateful day and describes Venom's first encounter with Spider-Man.

The Good: Art - I love great pictures that can paint a perfect scene. The first time Venom revels his teeth and the final fight between Venom and Spider-Man are prime examples of this. Story - I found the story to be very interesting; it also filled in a lot of gaps in Eddie's story before becoming Venom as well as a brief look into the symbiote's history. Also, in a time of Anti-Venom and Mac Gargan Venom, its nice to get a good old classic Venom story (even if its just a retelling of a good old classic Venom story).

The Bad: Pace - I understand that the writers wanted to give a proper backstory to Eddie, but this cost them precious Venom time. Even though he is depicted on each of the 5 covers, Venom doesn't appear in the books until issue 3 (even then its only on the last couple panels).

The Overall: This series is forgettable, mainly because it was already told 20 years ago. Don't get me wrong, I like the idea of retelling the story with added elements, I just wanted more Venom and less of Eddie's psyche. 3 outta 5
