REVIEW: siege spider-man

The Story: Venom has been impersonating Spider-Man for over a year now and Spidey has finally had enough. During a battle in Asgard, Spider-Man meets up with the 'Dark Spider-Man.'

There are some spoilers in the following review. Do not read if you haven't read Siege: Spider-Man 1. You've been warned.

The Good: The Action - The non-stop action. Right from page one, Venom is terrorizing Asgard and it only takes Spider-Man until page three to throw the first punch. The Symbiote - I never realized it until this comic, but the Symbiote has been calling all the shots for quite some time now. It is the one eating the Asgardians, it is the one that ditches Mac and bonds with Ms. Marvel and it is the one that forces her to stay with it. Apparently, it only needs a host to keep its form.

The Bad: The Hype - Marvel promoted this comic with the promise there would be a brand new Venom. Well, there was...for six of the 22 pages. I don't think I'm the only one when I say I'm ready for a new Venom host. Although I didn't get my hopes up for this book to introduce one, I thought maybe they would leave us with a cliff hanger that suggested a new Venom was in the works. How does Ms. Marvel's energy not hurt the Symbiote? Unnecessary - I hate 'event' comics. They are printed to only make a couple bucks. Seriously, this whole 'Siege event' is about the Dark Avengers. Why is the Dark Avengers ending and a Siege limited series along with multiple one-shots being made to finish the story? What did this comic accomplish? It didn't move the story along (except now Spidey knows Ms. Marvel likes him) and Venom wasn't captured (so he is free to continue killing).

The Overall: 3 outta 5. I'm being generous because with as little action as Venom is getting recently, I will take any Venom centered book I can get! I am ready for Mac to lose the Symbiote and after reading this, I wouldn't mind if a super villain (one with actual powers) would become the new Venom. I think it would be cool to see what the Symbiote could do with additional powers. Hasn't The Amazing Spider-Man line introduced a couple new villains recently? Why not create a new host for the Symbiote and revamp Venom?

spider-man/fantastic four

Spider-Man & Fantastic Four VS Symbiote

Remember back in February 2009 when Spider-Man and the X-Men teamed up to fight Carnage? Well, it looks like the creative team that developed that limited series is back at it again, this time putting Spidey with the Fantastic Four. However, they won't be battling Carnage, the five-some will be fighting a host-less Venom symbiote!

According to an interview with the writer:

" Of course, these team-ups will not be to buy groceries or pick up garbage in Central Park, which means the five-some will be locking horns with baddies a-plenty. "Venom!" Gage excitedly proclaims. "Well, the Venom symbiote without a host. In issue #3, the Skrull temptress De'Lila will set the members of the new and old FF against each other-though mixing the rosters up a bit." "

So the article tells us that issue #1 will be Doc Doom and Nomar...issue #3 will be the Skrull...issue #4 will be an 'existing character'...so I guess we can plan on seeing the symbiote in issue #2?

I loved the way they brought back Carnage in last years limited series and I'm excited to see what they do with Venom. Spider-Man/Fantastic Four comes out this July. If you want to read the full article, click here to go to Marvel.com.

**UPDATE**

Comicbookresources.com posted an interview they did with the writer at C2E2; it looks like I was correct in assuming the symbiote would make an appearance in issue #2:

" Our second issue occurs during the John Byrne run, when She-Hulk had replaced the Thing on the FF. Dan Slott actually made an inspired suggestion surrounding the fact that it was the FF who helped Spider-Man get free of the symbiotic black costume that eventually became Venom - and Mario did such an amazing job drawing Carnage last time around, I jumped at it. So look for more symbiote shenanigans! "

siege: spider-man preview 2

Spidey vs Dark Spidey

Next week we get our first Venom v Spider-Man comic of 2010! An anonymous TVS.com surfer brought to my attention a couple new preview pages of the new comic, Siege: Spider-Man #1. You can check out the full gallery here. Since there is dialog in the new previews, I don't want to spoil it for anyone that likes to go in fresh, so I won't post the pics.

I might have to brush up on what is going on with the Dark Avengers, since Siege takes place during those events. I am totally lost reading these couple preview pages.

How psyched are you for this new Venom story?
