TVS EXCLUSIVE: cullen bunn q&a round 2

Cullen Bunn Interview
After reading VENOM #36, I felt it was a good time to setup another interview with Cullen Bunn to see where he plans on taking the series.  A couple days after he agreed, Mania was announced.  This led to an onslaught of interviews including ones from ReadComicBooks, ComicBookResources, and Newsarama.  However, Cullen decided to save the best site for last!

TVS: Once again thank you for setting aside some time to answer our VENOM questions. I really do admire how much you interact with your fans.
Cullen: Thanks to you and the fans for taking the time to talk with me!

Let's start with the exciting news from last week's September's solicitations, namely that Venom is getting his own symbiote sidekick, Mania. How did Mania come about? Did you always intend to create another symbiote when you took over the series?
When I took over VENOM from Rick Remender, I put together a long outline (a couple of years worth of stories) for what I had in mind. Part of that outline included the introduction of a new symbiote-powered character. The outline has been changed and blown up over and over again for various reasons, but there were bits and pieces that carried over. The introduction of Mania is one of those pieces. The original plan was quite different, but Mania wouldn't have come about without that original kernel of an idea. She’s a natural progression from where the series… and where Flash… has been going for a while.

And… keep in mind… while the Mania-focused solicit was just released, Mania shows up before issue 40.

Last issue, we were introduced to Lord Ogre, a villain you created specifically for Venom. What kind of guy is Lord Ogre and why is he a good adversary for Flash?
Going into issue 37, Flash is trying to establish himself as Philly’s “Dark Avenger” style superhero. He starts to build a network of contacts, begins getting his resources in order… all so he can be a more efficient hero-by-night. As I thought about this aspect of the character, I decided Venom needed a new rogue’s gallery. That’s where Lord Ogre comes in. He’s essentially the kingpin of all underground activity in Philly, and he’s established himself (among lowly criminal types) as this kind of religious figure—a holy man of crime. He’s also surrounded himself with a cadre of sinister, strange characters. Lord Ogre is really a driving force for change in Venom’s life. Early on, he sets the dogs of war on Venom’s trail. These “dogs” include a host of assassins. And this has a domino effect that leads to the creation of Mania.

Since taking over the series on issue 23, you have slowly been building up a decent size supporting cast for Venom – Katy Kiernan, Valkyrie, Damien Hellstrom, 'The Demon', Monsters of Evil, U-Foes, Eddie Brock/Toxin, Lord Ogre, Mania. Are you planning to continue to build up VENOM's roster or will we see some of his supporting cast resurface and maybe cross paths with one another?
Both! Many supporting cast members will be resurfacing or taking on more important roles. Katy, Mania, and Hellstrom all have important roles to play in the next few issues. You’ll see the Monsters of Evil again, too, as I wrap up some of the story lines they’re associated with. I’ll also be adding some new characters to the cast… mostly in minor roles… especially as Venom starts building his foundation of allies in his war against Philly’s crime lord.

How far down the road do you have VENOM mapped out? Are there any upcoming stories you are particularly excited about?
Like I said, I created a long outline for the series. The outline features phrases like “Project: Rebirth,” “Anti-Venom,” “Toxin,” “the Descent,” “War for the Symbiote,” “Crime-Master,” etc… all elements I like a great deal. But that outline changed from the beginning, and many of those elements have shifted and been put on hold. There are so many stories I’d love to tell. For now, I’m still most excited about the next 6 issues or so, which feature the origin of Mania and the return of Jack O’Lantern.

We are slowly approaching VENOM's 50th issue milestone; do you have anything special planned if when the series hits that magic number?
Every interview needs one “wait and see” answer, right? Well, this is it. There are big things in Venom’s future.

Finally, it seems as though many fans are quite fond of Scorn and want to know if you have any plans for her whether in VENOM or your FEARLESS DEFENDERS series?
The interesting thing about Scorn (and I’ve been thinking about it a lot) is that her origin and current standing in the Marvel Universe means (for me, at least) that she needs a very specific story in order to work. I do, however, see her having a place in a book like FEARLESS DEFENDERS. That book is intended to showcase underused female characters, and she fits the bill.

Fan Questions: WolfCyper: Since taking over Venom what has been your favorite arc to work on so far?
I think the Toxin arc has been my favorite. I typically think in 5 or 6 issue arcs when developing stories. That’s the story length I prefer. But most of the arcs in Venom have been 3 issues in length because of crossovers or changing artists, etc. With the Toxin arc I was able to take my time with the story… and it didn’t hurt that I was able to write a kickass symbiote brawl.

Luis Jimenez: What do you use to inspire your crazy awesome stories? Do you blast music or do some hobby before settling down to write it?
I dunno where this stuff comes from! I don’t really have a ritual when I sit down to write (and I rarely listen to music while writing). Sometimes I’ll read some comics (old and new) that I love just to get me blood pumping.

Jamie Eccleston: Now that the amazing Toxic arc has finished, do you have any thoughts on Eddie and Toxin's future?
I think Eddie has a role to play as a major anti-hero in the Marvel Universe. I’d love to see him play the role of Toxin for a long while, even taking center-stage. While my heart never melted for the previous “Lethal Protector” phase of Eddie Brock, I think a modern take on that aspect of his life might be kind of awesome.

Thanks again to Cullen for taking the time out of his busy schedule to entertain our questions!

cullen bunn talks venom with newsarama

Newsarama Interview
Cullen continues to make his Internet rounds talking about Venom, Mania, and Lord Ogre.  The nice thing is with each interview, we get a little information about these characters.  The newest Q&A session comes from Newsarama:

Newsarama: Cullen, let's talk about the recently unveiled Mania, a new symbiote-powered character who looks like she's going to be a sidekick to Venom. There have already been guesses as to the identity of the character, and I was curious about what motivated you to expand the symbiote world further, and however much you want to share at this point about the character?

Cullen Bunn: Mania is a character I've had in mind for a long while. Not necessarily since I took over Venom from Rick [Remender], but I had a notion even back then about introducing a new symbiote-enhanced character into the Venom universe. As I started working on the series, and especially once we decided to take Venom and move him to Philadelphia and I knew that I would be expanding his cast anyway, that's when Mania came into my mind, and I realized what I wanted to do with her as a character.

There has been a lot of speculation as to who the character is. There's been a lot of speculation as to, "Will she be a temporary character?" But my intent is that she will be a permanent addition to the Marvel Universe. She will play a huge role in the next several issues of Venom; she has a big part to play with resolving some storylines for Flash. And yet she puts Flash Thompson in a new role, because he will be taking a lot of responsibility for her arrival into the Marvel Universe.

Nrama: It definitely seems like a different dynamic for the character — Flash being in the role of superhero is still pretty new, so for him to be the senior partner in the equation has to be different thing for him.

Bunn: It is. It's going to be a little unsettling for Flash. And one of the reasons is, as you know, Flash has always been almost at odds with the symbiote. It's always caused him a little bit of frustration and headaches, in that his bond with the symbiote has almost been antagonistic at some points.

That's one of the things that we'll find with Mania is a completely different story. She'll find it much easier to relate to her symbiote, and to bond with that symbiote, than Flash ever did.

Nrama: Over the years, Marvel has introduced various symbiote characters, and though some have obviously succeeded more than others, to this day, there are fans out there who really like all of that stuff, and want more added to that mythology. Have you gotten a lot of feedback from those types of fans?

Bunn: Yes. As soon as I took over from Rick, who went to great lengths to kill off most of the other symbiote characters. As soon as the fans heard that someone else was taking over, I started getting the requests to bring back other symbiotes, and incorporate other symbiote characters who have appeared into the book. Hybrid, and Scream and Scorn — Scorn is the one everybody wants me to do something with.

If I was going to undo Rick Remender's good work, and if I was going to bring someone new in, I wanted it to be character I had a hand in creating. I wanted it to be someone that had my stamp on it. That's why I went with someone completely new. It's not that I have anything against those other symbiote characters, but the ones that Rick showed being killed by Eddie [Brock], I have no plans to undo their deaths.

Bringing this character into the book the way I'm doing makes sense for Flash. It works for Flash, and it impacts his character in a big way. If I just had Scorn show up, it wouldn't have had the gravitas that it would have with the way I'm going to introduce Mania.

Nrama: It seems like another evolution in making the book your own — Venom has been around for decades and, separately, Flash Thompson even longer, and you came into this series after it had already been established, but since then you've moved Flash to Philadelphia, you're debuted new characters, and now bringing in a new symbiote character feels like another example of you putting your own stamp on the book.

Bunn: Yeah, that's one of the things I wanted to do with it. I wanted to keep playing with expectations, and escalating stories in ways people are not expecting, and this seemed like the right time to do it. The storyline in which she appears — the solicit is for issue #40, but Mania does appear before issue #40 — is a lot of fun, and I think it's a little bit of a different story than people are expecting. I think her origin will surprise a number of people.

Nrama: Which artist designed Mania?

Bunn: That was Declan Shalvey. He's been doing the covers. Declan and I had been talking about introducing the new symbiote character for a while, before we knew he was going to be moving off the book. It was nice that even though he is moving on to other products, he's still able to be involved with something that we've been talking about for a while.

How do you feel about Mania becoming a permanent addition to the Marvel U?

cullen bunn talks venom with comicbookresources

ComicBookResources Interview
Man, if I knew early last week that Mania would be released and Cullen was going to make his rounds around the Internet talking about VENOM, I would have waited to schedule a Q&A with him.  Oh well, you can never have too much Venom talk, right?

Today Cullen stops by CBR to talk about the current state of VENOM and shares some new art:

CBR News: At the end of "Venom" #35, Eddie Brock doubts Flash's ability to create a new life in Philly by keeping the Venom symbiote under control and using it to help people. How big of an impact did those doubts have on Flash? Is he determined to prove Eddie wrong going into "Venom" #36?

Cullen Bunn: To some degree, Flash has always been trying to disprove the stigma of Venom. But, yes, after his encounter with Toxin, he goes to work as the hero Philadelphia deserves. We'll go into #36 with a look at the day to day life of a "dark avenger" type hero in the big city. At the same time, he's trying to become a better person all around. Flash has a clear personal goal: Stop overcomplicating his own life and just do the right thing.

The other big fallout from the recently completed Toxin arc appears to be that Flash has caught the attention of his neighbor Andi, who is also a student at the high school he now teaches at. After the events of this arc how curious is Andi about Flash? What does she suspect him of being?

Well, as determined as Flash is to keep his life simple, more than a few monkey wrenches will be thrown into his plan.

Andi is the first -- and maybe the most significant -- of those wrenches. She's a smart girl. She's inquisitive, and she's seen enough to know that something out of the ordinary is going on with her favorite gym coach. She's keeping a close eye on Flash at this point, and that's going to be very problematic for him -- and very dangerous for her.

You kick off a new arc in "Venom" #36, and from that issue and the solicits for upcoming chapters, it seems like might have a weird crime story feel to it.

Issue 36 is something of a standalone issue. It tells a complete story, but it introduces themes and characters that will feature heavily in the next 3-issue arc. This issue, in particular, follows Venom as he starts heading out every night, busting heads in Philly's criminal underworld. We'll see Flash's overconfidence here, because as far as he's concerned, he's the baddest thing to ever stalk the streets of the City of Brotherly Love. That, of course, only lasts until he encounters someone bigger and badder than he is.

That spins us into the next few issues. Venom quickly realizes that if he's going to be a "real" super hero -- if he's going to stand up to well-connected kingpins, he's going to need help -- friendlies, stool pigeons, spies, and suppliers. To help him build that network, he turns to Katy Kiernan, who knows everyone. With her help, Venom builds a group of "irregulars" -- allies who help to make him a real force to be reckoned with.

Since your story involves Venom trying to establish himself as a crime fighter, what can you tell us about the criminal landscape of the Marvel U Philadelphia? How does it compare to New York city? Is there one top boss? Or are there many gangs struggling for control of the city?

Marvel's Philly has a bit of a split personality, and Flash's experiences in the city reflect that. During the day, Flash is concerned with building a life for himself . At night, Agent Venom patrols the streets and takes down criminals. While there are a number of factions and gangs controlling the criminal activities in the city, we'll soon learn that most of them are controlled, in one sense or another by one man -- Lord Ogre.

And I understand we'll soon see a new symbiote character named Mania --

Venom will be saddled with a new responsibility in the coming issues. And while he'll still be dealing with Lord Ogre, he'll also be going head to head with a villain who is as tough as nails and mean as a snakebite -- Crossbones.

All of this will coincide with the introduction of a new character called Mania. She shows up in the next arc and plays a big role in the story over the next several issues. She's consumed with a level of anger that may rival anything Flash has ever felt, and she may have a more natural connection to her symbiote than Flash ever had with his own, making her all kinds of dangerously lethal. Her sudden appearance will raise a number of questions for Venom -- most importantly if he can guide her toward the role of a hero instead of a villain. Look for her first appearance in issue #38.

Lord Ogre is a new character that you created for this story. What can you tell us about the character? What inspired his creation?

Earlier I mentioned that Venom would eventually run afoul of someone bigger and badder than he is. That encounter comes in the form of Lord Ogre, Philadelphia's worst-of-the-worst crime boss. He's tough, vicious, very well connected and funded, and just plain strange, seen by his followers as something of a religious figure.

Since this is the story of how Venom really establishes himself as Philly's resident hero, I wanted to give him his own rogue's gallery. Ogre was the first of these villains. He's a weird villain for a number of reasons -- very pulpy -- and he's accompanied by a strange band of henchman. These are not just faceless thugs, but a group of unique, dangerous individuals. You'll see them, albeit briefly, in issue 36.

Ogre is a physical threat himself, but he's above engaging someone like Venom directly. He works through his minions, hirelings, and henchmen. And he has a lot of those.

A lot.

Philly's crawling with villains in issues #37 – 39, including a smiley fella who's given Venom some serious trouble in the past.

Who are some of the other supporting players we'll see in this current story? Will any of the characters you already established play significant roles? And will we meet any new characters like say representatives of Philadelphia law enforcement?

Katy Kiernan and Andi both play significant roles in the next several issues. We'll also be meeting several members of Venom's new contact network. This network, though, won't necessarily be what you expect. Venom's contacts come from some of the more unexpected corners of Philly. We won't be seeing any members of law enforcement joining his coterie just yet.

I feel like a story about an ex-soldier paired with an alien symbiote should have some 50's sci-fi overtones, a sense of the surreal. Venom's supporting characters reflect that sensibility.

You're working with artist Pepe Larraz on this arc -- what is he bringing to this story as an artist?

Holy cow! I was absolutely blown away by Pepe's art. Not only does he draw some intense action sequences, but this script called for him to design some really wild stuff. One of the things he designed will go down in history as my favorite thing to appear in a "Venom" comic -- ever!

But Pepe only draws issue #36. Issues #37 – 39 are illustrated by Kim Jacinto, who brings a wonderful grittiness to the story. Especially when dealing with some of the nuttier aspects of this story. Kim's art helps to ground it and give it that street level crime story feel.

The next several issues are very action-packed. When Venom meets Lord Ogre, they make quite an impression on each other. Venom wants to take this villain down in a big way.

Lord Ogre, on the other hand, puts a marker on Venom's head that tempts a huge cadre of villains out of the woodwork. Most of these villains aren't planning on sharing the reward, though, and they're not above betraying and attacking each other on their mission to kill Venom.

While all this is going on, an old enemy resurfaces -- and he quickly gets blood on his hands

That's right folks, JACK IS BACK!

cullen bunn talks venom with readcomicbooks

ReadComicBooks Interview
Cullen Bunn answered some questions with our friends over at RCB about VENOM:

RCB: Let’s talk Venom. After taking the reins from Rick Remender, you have really come into your own with this series, especially with the recent “Broxin” arc. Can you tell us a little bit about Eddie Brock and the Toxin symbiote and your ideas for him moving forward?
Cullen Bunn: Rick and I had introduced the idea of Eddie Brock as Toxin during the “Savage Six” arc of VENOM that we wrote together. At that stage, Toxin was really this hulking, near-mindless monster, nearly consumed by hate. When I took over the book, I knew that I would eventually bring Toxin back into the story, and I knew that I wanted to reinvent him to some degree. By the time Toxin reappeared, Eddie and the symbiote had come to terms with one another. I wanted him to be more like the “Lethal Protector”—an anti-hero of sorts. Right now, he’s lurking somewhere around Philly, keeping an eye on Venom and occasionally busting heads while he’s at it. I think there are definitely more stories to be told from the “Broxin” perspective.
RCB: What makes the Toxin suit such a great fit for Eddie Brock?
Cullen Bunn: Toxin and Eddie have something very powerful in common—they both hate Venom. Initially, that was enough to make them the perfect partners. Now that Eddie has seen that Flash has the potential for good, Eddie and Toxin have to turn their anger toward other targets.
RCB: Venom #36 starts a new arc, and introduces a new villain known as Lord Ogre. Can you tell us a little bit about this guy and what threats he poses to Agent Venom in this new arc?
Cullen Bunn: When I started thinking about establishing Venom as a real hero for the city of Philadelphia, I decided he needed resources—allies and suppliers and informants—but he also needed a rogue’s gallery of sorts. Lord Ogre was the first of them, a really powerful, really influential, and really strange guy who is almost a religious figure in Philly’s underworld. He’s going to set a fire, so to speak, that will threaten to tear Venom down before he really gets started… and will pave the road to some big changes in Venom’s life. Lord Ogre isn’t one to get his hands dirty, but he certainly believes in overkill when it comes to hiring killers.
RCB: Speaking of this new arc, along with a new villain and a new direction we’re also getting another new artist. Was this always the plan for Venom, to switch up artists with different arcs, or can we expect a more regular artist in the future?
Cullen Bunn: I think the plan is always to find a regular artist for the book, but that’s not always a simple feat when you’re balancing shipping schedules with artists’ schedules. But I think the artists on the next couple of arcs—Kim Jacinto and Jorge Coelho—are really gonna wow readers. I’m very lucky to work with both of them.
RCB: It was also recently announce that issue 40 would see the introduction of a new symbiote female, can you tell us a little bit about her?
Cullen Bunn: Her name is Mania, and she’s going to be a big headache for Flash Thompson… and she will actually debut before issue 40. Her first appearance will be in issue 38, I believe. I think her origin will be surprising for a number of reasons, not the least of which is she will seem to have a much more “pure” connection to her symbiote than Flash has with his.
Cullen will answer our TVS questions later this week!
